Coimbatore; Farmers have demanded that the sewage water accumulated in the Singanallur pond be drained, the banks strengthened and the water of the Noyyal river be stored.
At a grievance meeting held yesterday in the Coimbatore Corporation, the farmers, led by Tamil Nadu Farmers’ Association Coimbatore District Committee President Elangovan and Secretary Palaniswami, stated in the petition submitted by them: – For the past 25 years, all the waste of the Coimbatore Corporation has been coming to the Singanallur pond from the Sanganur Vaikkal and Nanjundapuram areas. The pond has been polluted with sewage water and the groundwater has deteriorated. Agriculture and animal husbandry have been affected. The Singanallur pond has become high due to the sewage. The sewage water should be removed and the pond should be drained. Then, the water of the Noyyal river should be diverted and the pond filled. A retaining wall should be built on the banks of the pond.
The Rajavaikkal road passing through Nanjundapuram should be widened; the shop gate should be repaired, a high-level bridge should be built and brought into use for traffic. The toll road connecting Singanallur – Vellalur should be brought into use.
Thus, it has been said.
