Spread the love

With the beginning of the month of Karthigai, pottery workers in Coimbatore are busy making lamps. In particular, pottery workers on Udayar Street in Koundampalayam, Coimbatore are showing great enthusiasm in making lamps. Regarding this, pottery worker Senthilkumar said:

We have been involved in making pottery since ancient times. We make pots, Pongal pots, stoves, flower pots, and lamps. Now that Karthigai Deepam is approaching, we are engaged in making lamps. Lamps ranging from 1 liter to 5 liters are being made. Prices will be determined according to the size. Every year, we produce up to 15 lakh lamps. This year, due to the rains for the last two months, the production of akalvilaka has decreased.

This is the month of Karthigai, when lamps speak
Therefore, there is a shortage of akalvilaka. So far, up to 10 lakh lamps have been sold. We are also selling to areas including Tiruppur and Ooty. Thus, he said.

‘Soil shortage’
”Currently, there is a shortage due to the problem of soil extraction.
If the government creates an environment that is free from obstacles for soil extraction, this industry will continue to operate. Otherwise, it will weaken. Pottery workers are given Rs. 5000 per year. Similarly, a subsidy should be provided to buy pottery making equipment,” said Senthilkumar.
