Pollachi; Forest officials are filling water in artificial water bodies within the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve to quench the thirst of wildlife.
The Anaimalai Tiger Reserve covers an area of 1,479 sq km and includes eight forest areas namely Pollachi, Manampally, Valparai, Ulandhi, Udumalai, Amaravati, Vandara, and Kollam.

This forest area is home to a large number of wildlife including elephants, buffaloes, deer, tigers, and various types of birds.
These are fulfilling their water needs through water sources such as ponds, streams, and creeks in the forest. However, during the summer drought, wildlife suffers due to lack of water. An environment is created where wildlife roams in search of water bodies. Thus, due to the lack of rain for the past few months and high temperatures during the day, there is a severe drought in the forest. Trees, plants, and vines are drying up.

Water-bearing areas such as dams, seepage ponds, farm ponds, and rivers are also drying up.

Tanks with deep wells have been set up here and there in the forest, and water is being filled there. Apart from this, water is being carried by tractors and the tanks set up here and there are being filled.

Forest officials said, “Water is being carried and filled in artificial water tanks, farm ponds, and seepage ponds in the forest reserve areas by tractors. The water level in the tanks will be monitored periodically. Steps will be taken to refill the water accordingly. These works are being carried out throughout the tiger reserve.”
