Due to the rain that fell in the Periyanayakkanpalayam area yesterday evening, water accumulated like a pond on the flyover. Due to this, motorists faced great hardship.
To overcome the traffic congestion that occurs in the morning and evening hours at the Periyanayakkanpalayam junction area on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam road, a flyover was constructed from Periyanayakkanpalayam Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya to Jyothipuram, a distance of 1.6 km, at a cost of Rs. 115 crore.
Even after two years of being dedicated for public use, the public is facing great difficulties due to various technical defects in the flyover.
Yesterday evening, it rained in the Periyanayakkanpalayam area. Due to this, water stagnated in the flyover area near the Easwaran Temple on the Periyanayakkanpalayam flyover. Due to this, people travelling on two and four wheelers faced great difficulty. As rainwater stagnated on the flyover, many people used the road under the flyover. Regarding this, the public said, ‘Since the construction work of the bridge is very poor, such incidents continue to happen during the rainy season.

The area where vehicles get on and off near the Periyanayakkanpalayam LMW section is a pothole, making it difficult for small to large vehicles to pass through that area.

Despite repeated complaints to the National Highways Department officials, no action has been taken. Moreover, the bridge is uneven and uneven. The width at the junction of the flyover road and the approach road in Jyothipuram is very narrow.

Due to this, accidents often occur. The work of acquiring land in the area and expanding the approach road is also dragging on. They said that there are no lights on both sides of the bridge so that vehicles can freely pass at night.

What is the reason for the accumulation of rainwater?
Large holes have been made on the side of the road on the flyover near the Easwaran Temple in the Periyanayakkanpalayam flyover to drain rainwater. The water that accumulates during rains flows out through the holes and goes to the sewer through a pipe attached to it. However, since the highway department does not clean and maintain the holes frequently, the holes are filled with soil, sludge, coconut fibers, and small bottles. Due to this, during the rainy season, the holes get clogged and a large amount of water accumulates on the flyover, causing great inconvenience to motorists. Last night, National Highways Department employees were engaged in the work of removing the blockage of the hole in the bridge and draining the accumulated rainwater.
