Coimbatore: “Catch the stray dogs roaming in Coimbatore and export them to China or pursue a public interest litigation in the High Court on behalf of the corporation,” said DMK councilor Siva. A recent survey conducted by the Coimbatore Corporation revealed that 1,15,000 stray dogs are roaming around. They are caught with the help of private organizations and sterilized.

So far, only 30,000 dogs have been sterilized. The corporation’s health department has set a target of sterilizing the remaining ones within three years.

The corporation spends Rs. 1,650 to sterilize a dog. Despite spending crores of rupees every year for this, the stray dog problem has not been solved. They roam the streets in droves.
DMK councilors have been continuously accusing the councilors of irregularities in the sterilization of stray dogs. In Coimbatore alone, six people have died so far due to stray dog bites.

In this context, DMK councilor Siva spoke at the North Zone meeting held in Coimbatore Corporation yesterday, “The problem of stray dogs is increasing. There is a habit of eating dog meat in China. Coimbatore Corporation should sign a trade agreement with that country and export stray dogs. With the income generated from that, carry out development works in two wards,” he said.

Zonal president Kathirvel responded, “We can only send them as meat; we cannot send them alive. There is a ban on killing dogs,” he said.

Siva continued, “This is a serious problem. The sterilization treatment center is not sufficient; by the time we build a new one and treat all the dogs, the number of dogs will increase. Therefore, a public interest litigation should be filed in the High Court. We can seek a court order to solve the stray dog problem,” he said.
