As the work of the elephant camp being set up at the cost of 8 crore rupees in Coimbatore has reached the completion stage, the forest department is planning to open it after getting the approval of the Central and State Governments. The elephant camp was started in the year 2012 by the forest department in Sativayal under Poluvampatti Forest Division, Coimbatore Vanakottam. In this camp, Kumki elephants bred in Coimbatore district were used to control wild elephants entering the town.In November 2020, the Kumki elephant, Tapsilip, was taken away from here. It has not been brought back since.In the district of Coimbatore, as wild elephants are entering the town and damaging the agricultural lands, many parties have been insisting that an elephant camp should be established again in Sativyal. will be set up. It was announced that 19 domesticated elephants from MR Palayam, Trichy will be brought here.
Subsequently, at the end of March last year, the work of setting up a new elephant camp in an area of 50 acres was started. Renovation of facilities in old elephant camp, addition of 18 new elephant sheds, 2 carols, two km long solar electric fence, 40 solar lights, 3 small ponds, 8 shelters for mawts and kavadis, 20 water facilities, 5 elephant baths Shower, overhead cistern, borewell, CCTV, cameras, The work of moat around the elephant camp has been started and completed. A few remaining works will be completed soon.The forest department said, ‘The work of the elephant camp being set up in Sativyal has been completed by 95 percent.The rest of the work will be completed this month. After that, the permission of the central and state governments will be obtained and the elephants will be brought. It is also planned to bring back Kumki elephants here.’
