Pollachi: As the Sabarimala season has begun, the demand for coconuts has increased and prices have increased. Farmers said that the price has increased by up to 5,000 rupees per ton.
A large amount of coconut is cultivated in Pollachi and surrounding areas of Coimbatore district. Coconuts, copra, etc. are sent from these areas to various parts. Copra coconuts are graded and prices are fixed.
Farmers have been struggling for the past few years due to insufficient prices for coconuts. Due to reasons such as price drop, drought, and disease outbreaks, coconut farmers were in a state of recovery.
After three years, the price of copra has now increased to 140 rupees. In this situation, with the Sabarimala season beginning, the demand for coconuts has increased and prices are rising. Compared to last month, the price of a tonne of coconut has increased by up to Rs. 5,000.
Thangavelu, state representative of the Coconut Producers Association, said:
Since the three months of Karthigai, Margazhi and Thai are the Sabarimala season, the demand for coconut has increased. As coconut production has decreased in states including Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, there is a shortage of coconut in the market.
