Coimbatore: While the sale of pumpsets bearing the ‘Star’ stamp has been made mandatory from 2026, Coimbatore pumpset companies have been facing a crisis due to industries using fake ISO and Star stamps in northern states.
A meeting of pump manufacturers was held on behalf of industry bodies South Indian Engineering Manufacturers Association (SEEMA), ‘Coindia’ and ‘Chitark’ on Thursday evening at the ‘Coindia’ premises located on Awarampalayam Road, Coimbatore.
Mithun Ramdas, President of South Indian Engineering Manufacturers Association, and Karthik, President of Indian Pump Manufacturers Association (IPMA), said: With the aim of promoting the production of energy-saving pumpsets, the sale of pumpsets bearing the Star stamp has been made mandatory from January 1, 2026. This announcement is very important as Coimbatore district industries contribute 50 percent of India’s pumpset demand.
Various steps have been simplified based on the comments made by industry bodies so that all companies can implement this scheme. It is the implementation method that will be difficult for entrepreneurs. This event is being organized with the aim of helping the industry by coming together. They said this.
Speaking, former Seema President Krishnakumar said, “A move was made in 2009 to make the Star mark mandatory. Pumpsets should not be compared with other electronic products like TVs and refrigerators. A motor vehicle will perform well only on the basis of road quality, traffic congestion, and the facility to travel at a certain speed. But as far as pumpsets are concerned, there is a difference in the power supply to each state.
Especially in many northern states including Jharkhand and Bihar, if a pumpset with the Star mark is used in the electricity distributed, it will not work. However, since pumpset products manufactured in the northern states do not even have ISI, many companies are illegally using fake quality seals like ‘ISI’ and ‘5 Star’.
All pumpsets manufactured in Coimbatore district are sold with the quality seal duly obtained. Therefore, Tamil Nadu industry organizations should insist on carefully monitoring the above-mentioned measures when implementing the scheme to make the Star seal mandatory for pumpset products. It will be a challenge for micro and small enterprises. However, entrepreneurs need to prepare themselves accordingly,” he said.
‘Coindia’ President Vignesh, ‘Chittork’ Pumpset Quality Testing Center President Mohan Senthilkumar, Tamil Nadu Pump Manufacturers Association President Kalyansundaram, Compressor Manufacturers Association President Krithika and many other pumpset manufacturers participated.
