The Tamil Nadu Forest Department conducts an annual integrated bird census. Everything related to birds, such as bird habitats, endangered birds, endemics, threats to birds, and migration patterns, is monitored and recorded.
This year’s census was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, wetland birds were surveyed on the 8th and 9th.
In the second phase, 25 terrestrial bird habitats were identified and the survey was conducted in Coimbatore district. 25 teams consisting of 126 participants including forest officials, bird experts, bird enthusiasts, and students participated in the survey. Led by Chief Conservator of Forests Venkatesh, the team was coordinated and led by District Forest Officer Jayaraj.

In these surveys, a total of 232 species of birds were found in the direct count of 9,033 birds. On average, 167 to 763 birds were found in a survey area. The highest number of birds was seen in the Koodamandi and Kanthavyal areas.
In rural areas, 46 species of birds were found in Thaliyur. Out of the total 232 species found, 207 were land birds and 25 were water birds. This information has been released by the forest department. Ten nightjars found!
For the first time, a nightjar census was conducted to count the nightjars or nightjars, which hunt only at night. In this, 10 nightjar species were found, including 4 species of pheasants, 5 species of owls, and one great horned owl. During this survey, 41 migratory bird species were found. Important bird species including the red-crowned crane, the hawk-owl, and the stone-tailed godwits were identified in the survey.
