The Anti-Naxal Unit and Special Target Force police are actively monitoring the Mettupalayam forest area. A crackdown is being carried out to prevent Maoists and hunting gangs from entering. Awareness is also being created among the tribals. The Mettupalayam forest reserve is located near the Coonoor and Kotagiri forests. This forest reserve has an area of 9,780 hectares. There is Maoist activity in the forests of Wayanad and Malappuram districts of Kerala, which are located along the border of the Nilgiris district.
To prevent them from entering the Nilgiris district, to prevent them from coming to Mettupalayam via the Nilgiris district and going to Kerala via Karamadai, and to prevent them from getting weapons and narcotics from Karnataka and Kerala, the Tamil Nadu Special Action Force, Sathyamangalam Special Target Force, and the Anti-Naxal Unit police are conducting special patrols in the forest areas in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts.
In the Mettupalayam forest area, the Coimbatore District Anti-Naxal Unit Inspector Ananda Vel, along with the police of the unit and the Sathyamangalam Special Target Force, are jointly conducting intensive surveillance with firearms in the dense forest area of the forest area. We are conducting intensive surveillance with firearms in the dense forest areas of Jagkanari, Kallar, Nelli Malai, Sundapatti Division, Kandiyur, Kunjappanai within the Mettupalayam forest area for 10 to 15 km to check for Maoist movement, movement of strangers, hunting gangs, and sandalwood cutting gangs. Although there is no Maoist movement in the Mettupalayam forest area, we are conducting continuous surveillance.
Similarly, we are investigating whether cannabis has been cultivated. We are collecting details regarding the arrival of new people in the hill villages. The people of the area are also being made aware of Naxalite activities.

Mettupalayam Forest Warden Joseph Stalin said, “There is no Maoist movement in the Mettupalayam forest area. We are creating awareness among the people of the hill villages including Kilchengallur and Kilbillur along the Kerala border. Furthermore, we are taking steps in this regard after knowing the needs of the people,” he said.—
