The Corporation is shaking its head and scratching its nose! After passing a resolution to shift markets… Vegetable and fruit traders invited for consultation
The Corporation has invited traders to consult on the relocation of the wholesale vegetable and fruit markets in Coimbatore to the integrated bus stand complex near the Vellalur garbage dump. Vegetable traders have expressed their opinion that the resolution was passed in a hurry and without clarity in this regard. The work of constructing an integrated bus stand on 61.62 acres in Vellalur on behalf of the Coimbatore Corporation was started during the AIADMK regime; 52.46 crore rupees have been spent. After the DMK came to power, the work has been frozen without giving any reason. A resolution has been passed in the corporation to convert the use of this place into a wholesale vegetable and fruit market and a lorry depot. Karthikeyan, the chairman of the council committee of the ruling party in the assembly, has urged that the decision to convert the lorry depot should be reconsidered as it will cause traffic problems.
Environmental condition is bad
There is a garbage dump near the bus stand complex; garbage collected in the city area is dumped. The people of the area are suffering due to its stench. They have been fighting for many years to shift the garbage dump to another place.
A case has been filed in the Southern Zone Green Tribunal. In this case, it has been advised that garbage should not be dumped in the open in Vellalur. However, the corporation has not stopped dumping garbage in the open.
In this situation, there is a fear among the people of the area that setting up vegetable and fruit markets will further affect the environment. Flies from the garbage dump will sit on vegetables and fruits; Traders are also reluctant to go there as those who consume it may be exposed to the disease.
Following this, the corporation administration has decided to consult with the vegetable and fruit wholesalers and the Lorry Pet Association administrators. A consultation meeting with the vegetable wholesalers will be held tomorrow (3rd) at 11:00 am at the corporation main office.
A meeting with the fruit traders will be held at 3:00 pm. A special meeting has been organized to consult with the Lorry Pet Association administrators at 11:00 am the day after tomorrow (4th). In a story that touches the nose around the head, the corporation administration hastily passes a resolution in the council in an ‘all-pass’ manner and then consults the traders separately.
‘There should be no garbage warehouse’ vegetable traders condition
Coimbatore District All Wholesale Vegetable Traders Association President Rajendran said:
In Vellalur, an area of 27,693 square feet has been allocated; this comes to five and a half acres. But, D.K. Market is six acres; M.G.R. Market is three and a half acres; Ukkadam Market is two acres. In this situation, what would happen if we give less than the area of D.K. Market?
The space required to unload the vegetable bundles coming for wholesale trade is unimaginable. There are those who unload 10 loads, 20 loads, 25 loads. Not enough space has been allocated for four markets.
In each market, how many wholesale vegetable shops are operating and how much area each shop requires has not been measured. The resolution has been passed in a vague manner.
Even if a market is set up there, it should be set up with spacious facilities like the Koyambedu market. Before shifting the shops, what facilities should be considered?
If we ask like that, we will pose the question, ‘There is garbage; diseases will come to us too’. If three markets are set up, 1,000 people, including traders and workers, will be there permanently; we cannot come home sick.
Traders from not only Tamil Nadu but also Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh will come; vehicles will come from all over India. Facilities should be provided for the functioning of the market; for that, it does not mean accepting inconveniences. If the garbage dump is emptied, we can go there. We should not say that we will build a market amidst garbage. If a market is to be set up, the garbage dump should be removed.
A resolution has been passed in the assembly in a hurry in this regard without detailed deliberation. It is enough to remove the garbage dump and give it space; we will build it ourselves.
The plan can be changed. A clear decision can be taken only in a joint consultation meeting.
Thus he said.
The people of the area are afraid that setting up vegetable and fruit markets will further damage the environment. The flies from the garbage dump will settle on the vegetables and fruits; those who consume them will be exposed to diseases, so the traders are also reluctant to go there.
The resolution was passed only now to re-measure the garbage. We will not go to the Vellalur Integrated Bus Stand Complex’
