Railway passengers have been demanding that the Madurai — Coimbatore train be extended to Rameswaram. Train service was started from Coimbatore to Dhanushkodi 100 years ago. Many passengers used to travel on this. In 1964, due to a natural disaster in Dhanushkodi, the train service was affected. Following this, the train service in Dhanushkodi was stopped from that year and was operated up to Rameswaram.

Last, from 1964 to 2002, the Coimbatore — Rameswaram train was operated. After that, the same train was operated from Dindigul to Podanur from 2002 to 2006. At that time, this railway line was meter gauge.

After that, the railway line was converted from meter gauge to broad gauge. In this, in the first phase, Dindigul to Palani was converted to broad gauge in 2012, Palani to Pollachi in 2014, Pollachi to Palakkad in late 2015, and Pollachi to Podanur in 2017.

After that, various trains have been operating on this railway line since 2017. Currently, a daily train is operated between Madurai — Coimbatore. Rail passengers have requested that this train be extended from Madurai to Rameswaram.

Last year, on behalf of the Salem Railway Division, a proposal was sent to the Southern Railway to operate a night train between Madurai — Rameswaram. Similarly, in the Madurai division, a proposal was sent to the Southern Railway to operate two trains, Madurai — Coimbatore and Coimbatore — Rameswaram, as a single train, Madurai — Rameswaram.
