The Tamil Nadu government is operating specific types of buses so that women can travel free in city buses. Similarly, school and college students are allowed to travel free in all types of buses. Are these two concessions necessary? The audit department has conducted a study on whether these two concessions are necessary. According to the study, 53 percent of the respondents said that free concessionary travel should be provided only to the poor. 90 percent of the women said that free concessionary travel is beneficial. To the question of whether they are treated like paying passengers? 69 percent answered no. 62 percent of the students responded that they are able to continue their education only because of the free travel concession. Students and women said that each person can save Rs. 637 every month with free travel.
