In a decisive move ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) will launch his statewide campaign today from Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district—a traditional stronghold for the AIADMK in western Tamil Nadu.

The campaign, with the tagline “Protecting People and Redeeming Tamil Nadu,” aims to cover all 234 constituencies across the state. EPS is set to address a massive public rally this evening, where he is expected to critique the ruling DMK government over what he calls its “failures and unfulfilled promises.”

EPS’s campaign will address both statewide issues such as law and order, women’s safety, and the growing drug menace, as well as local constituency concerns. This tour is widely viewed as a make-or-break moment for the AIADMK, a party that has struggled since the passing of its iconic leader J. Jayalalithaa in 2016.

Following three consecutive election defeats, internal conflicts, and leadership struggles—especially during the dual leadership of EPS and O. Panneerselvam (OPS)—the party has seen a significant decline. EPS now stands as the sole leader, tasked with reviving the AIADMK’s electoral prospects.

Notably, after breaking off from the BJP alliance ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections—where both parties fared poorly against the DMK-led front—the AIADMK has tentatively re-engaged with the BJP. However, this revived alliance remains fragile, with skepticism at the grassroots level and weak organizational coordination.

Adding to EPS’s challenges is the entry of actor Vijay’s political outfit, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). Vijay, who recently declared himself the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate, has categorically ruled out any alliance with the BJP. His statewide tour and parallel membership drive scheduled from September to December signal his intent to become a serious political contender.

Drawing comparisons with political icons like C.N. Annadurai and M.G. Ramachandran, Vijay is attempting to emulate their journey from the silver screen to Fort St. George.

Key Political Questions Arise:

  • Will the AIADMK fully sever ties with the BJP to open the door for a potential understanding with TVK?

  • Will Vijay maintain his solo trajectory or seek alliances on his own terms?

Meanwhile, the DMK’s alliance remains solid and electorally formidable. Buoyed by three consecutive electoral victories, the ruling party is leaning on its flagship welfare schemes—including ₹1000 monthly assistance for women, free bus rides, school breakfast programmes, and youth skill training initiatives—to consolidate its voter base.

The DMK has also launched an aggressive door-to-door membership campaign, aiming to bring 30% of the state’s electorate into its fold.

With the 2026 election still nine months away, Tamil Nadu’s political battlefield is heating up. What once appeared to be a bipolar contest is now evolving into a four-way race between:

  • DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance

  • AIADMK-BJP alliance

  • Vijay’s TVK

  • Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK)

The months ahead will be crucial in determining whether old power structures will persist or if Tamil Nadu is on the brink of a political reconfiguration.
