Chennai: Due to the continuous rain, rainwater has been stagnant in many areas of Chennai. With a heavy rain warning for another four days, the situation is becoming complicated. Having concluded that it cannot be handled with the existing employees, the Corporation has deployed 2,000 temporary workers, 10 per ward, to repair the blockage of rainwater drainage. Due to this, rainwater has been stagnant in low-lying areas of Chennai. Even on major roads, rainwater has been stagnating, causing traffic congestion.
Due to the continuous rain, the water has not drained, causing severe traffic congestion in the areas of Sholinganallur, Chemmancheri, Duraipakkam, Velachery, Guindy, Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur.
Due to heavy congestion on the OMR, it took up to half an hour to cross a distance of 1 km. Water was accumulated up to the ankles in Nanmangalam, next to Medavakkam.
Rainwater accumulated in Alandur Mandal, Palavanthangal, Poonthottam areas and some streets in Adambakkam. Water entered the light vehicle tunnel opposite Hindu Mission Hospital in Tambaram, Perambur tunnel.
Due to the wind and rain, tree branches broke and fell in some places in Adyar and Velachery areas. Weakened trees were uprooted.
A ‘Suzuki-Balena’ car was damaged when a tree fell on the Velachery-Dandeeswaran main road. Street lights were also damaged in some places. Sewage water came out through the machine entry culvert covers and flooded the road with rainwater.
The rain has disrupted normalcy in many places in Chennai, including T. Nagar, Vadapalani, Manali, and Kolathur.
While a day of rain has caused waterlogging, traffic congestion, and power outages in Chennai, the Meteorological Department has warned that heavy rains will continue in Chennai and its suburbs for the next four days.
Therefore, the corporation administration is busy with safety and precautionary measures.
In this regard, Chennai Corporation Deputy Mayor Mahesh Kumar said: Preventive measures have been taken to prevent rainwater from accumulating in Chennai. All low-lying areas and areas that were flooded during the last rain are being monitored through the Integrated Command and Control Center at the Corporation headquarters. During heavy rains, permission has been given to assistant engineers to appoint up to 2,000 people, 10 employees per ward, to prevent rainwater from accumulating on the roads. They will work on a temporary basis for five days. They have been engaged in the task of repairing blockages in the sedimentation tanks that lead to the stormwater canal.
Similarly, during each rainstorm, workers are appointed on a temporary basis and will be involved in the task of preventing rain and flood damage.
In addition, 1,223 motor pumps have been kept ready. Adequate diesel has been purchased for this.
103 boats will be used for emergency needs in low-lying areas. It has also been advised to immediately resolve complaints filed by the public on the number ‘1913’ related to rain.
Although there will not be a major rain damage in Chennai, we are working vigilantly to cope with the severe rain damage.
