Coimbatore: The Urban Planning Department is measuring the water supply channels in the Noyyal river in the area under the Coimbatore Corporation through ‘Digital Survey’ and planting boundary stones. The Public Works Department has entrusted the responsibility of maintaining the nine tanks in the Coimbatore Metropolitan Area to the Corporation. It was recently clarified that the water supply channels for these have also been given to the Corporation.
Subsequently, the water channels starting from the area where the Noyyal river enters the metropolitan area and passing through the Singanallur tank were videotaped and inspected through ‘drone’. Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran ordered the Urban Planning Department to measure the water supply channels, plant boundary stones and remove any encroachments.
Encroachment
The water supply channel that branches off from the Noyyal River is covered in bushes at many places; it is covered with Agayathamarai. The width of the channel has narrowed due to encroachments. In some places, the water supply channel has become like a rainwater drain. They need to be restored and clean water should be added to the tanks.
For this, a ‘digital survey’ of water supply channels is being carried out for a total of 19.5 km, including 9.5 km in the southern zone, 5 km in the central zone, and 5 km in the eastern zone. The current width of the channel is measured, boundary stones are planted and the markings are painted.
Boundary stones
The Municipal Corporation Urban Planning Department said, “We are measuring the supply channels that send water from the Noyyal River to the ponds through ‘digital survey’ and installing boundary stones. We are measuring the water supply channel starting from Telugupalayam, passing the Singanallur pond bank, and up to the corporation boundary. If there are any encroachments, they will be removed in the next phase.”
