One lakh people have been directly employed in the gold and jewellery manufacturing industry in Coimbatore district.
When Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin stayed in Coimbatore for 2 days last month to inspect government projects, on the evening of November 5, he personally inspected the Kempatti Colony area in Coimbatore city, where goldsmiths live, and asked the goldsmiths what their demands were. Prior to this meeting, the Tamil Nadu All Gold and Jewellery Workers’ Union of the Tamil Nadu Vishwakarma Peravai submitted a petition to the Chief Minister, stating that the establishment of a gold and jewellery industrial park in Coimbatore would improve the livelihood of the gold and jewellery industry workers and that an order should be issued for the same immediately.
The next day, the Chief Minister announced that a gold and jewellery industrial complex would be built at a cost of Rs. 124 crore in the industrial estate in Kurichi, Coimbatore city.
It will also be a complex with all the facilities including a NABL accredited laboratory. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin announced that 2000 direct and 1500 indirect employment will be created in this.
In this situation, the Tamil Nadu Small Industries Development Corporation has invited tenders to prepare a detailed project report to set up a gold and jewellery industrial park at a cost of Rs. 126 crore in the Kurichi CIDCO Industrial Estate in Coimbatore.
The fact that the tender has been announced within 1 month of the Chief Minister’s announcement has made people in this industry happy.
