Coimbatore; To draw the attention of the Tamil Nadu government, the Vellalur Anti-Dump Dump Group Federation is organizing an attention-grabbing protest on the 6th. 1,250 tons of garbage is collected in the Coimbatore Corporation area every day. Even though it is collected and graded, the remaining garbage is sent for composting and dumped in the Vellalur dump. The groundwater in the area has turned yellow; the air is polluted.
Despite the Pollution Control Board’s repeated warnings not to dump garbage in the open, the corporation administration continues to make the same mistake without paying attention. Recently, a foul smell has been emanating from a 5 km radius. The public has been affected.
While there have been demands to shift the dump to another location, people have been suffering as various local bodies are planning to take the garbage to generate electricity. The heat has been high for a few weeks. However, people are suffering because they cannot even open their doors and windows for air. They have started a movement to collect one lakh signatures to draw the government’s attention to this issue.
They are going to hold an attention-grabbing protest on the 6th.

Why the protest?
The members of the Vellalur Anti-Garbage Dump Group said, ‘They started dumping garbage 30 years ago. At that time, there were not many houses. Now, lakhs of people live there. Their livelihoods must also be taken care of. People have started falling prey to diseases. Children and adults are having respiratory problems. We are asking them to close the garbage dump. But they say they are going to generate electricity. That is why we are taking up the protest.’
