Team to monitor Vellalur garbage dump 24 hours

Coimbatore; The garbage collected in the Coimbatore city area has been dumped like a mountain in the Vellalur dump. Methane gas is generated and the heat during the summer months causes fires. Unable to control the fire that broke out last year, the corporation officials were at a loss. As the summer heat approaches, various precautionary measures are being taken.

A ground-level tank with a capacity of five lakh liters and an overhead tank with a capacity of two lakh liters have been constructed.
Water pipes and fire stations have been laid for a length of 1,000 meters. A high-level observation tower has been installed to prevent the entry of outsiders, and ‘CCTV’ cameras have been installed at 20 places. 12 diesel motor pump sets, connected to firefighting equipment, have been kept ready.
Four water tanker trucks with personnel and four vehicles with jetting rods are available to extinguish the fire 24 hours a day.

A plan has been prepared to construct perimeter walls and fences in places where none exist; the corporation has decided to invite tenders soon. Saplings have been planted along the perimeter wall.
The purified water received from the Ukkadam wastewater treatment plant has been artificially stored by creating a pond.
Street lights have been ordered to be installed in the garbage dump premises.
A vehicle has been parked for 24-hour fire department surveillance. A team has been formed to monitor 24-hour surveillance. Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabhakaran personally inspected the works yesterday.
Southern Zonal Assistant Commissioner Kumaran, Administrative Engineer Elangovan, Assistant Administrative Engineer Kanagaraj, Zonal Health Officer Andiappan and others were present.
