Coimbatore; Traffic police have collected fines of over Rs 2.50 crore from drunk drivers.
Statistics show that Tamil Nadu has the highest number of road accidents and deaths in the country. It was found that most of the accidents occur due to traffic rule violations and the death toll is increasing.
To control this, the government is taking various awareness measures including road safety. However, traffic rule violations and the accidents caused by them are increasing. Therefore, to reduce accidents by increasing the fine amount, the central government amended the Motor Vehicle Act and increased the fine amount manifold in 2019.
In October 2022, the Tamil Nadu government implemented the central government’s new Motor Vehicle Act. According to this law, a fine of Rs 10 thousand is imposed for driving under the influence of alcohol.
In Coimbatore, 14,630 cases have been registered for drunk driving since 2019.
In many of these cases, motorists did not pay the fine if they did not file a ‘return’ with the Food Safety Department. Following this, the police have intensified the process of collecting fines from motorists. Coimbatore City Traffic Police Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar said, “Those who have been booked for drunk driving are being contacted and urged to pay the fine. Out of 1,000 people contacted daily, up to 100 people come in person.
We talk to them and make them pay the fine through mobile courts. After the arrival of the mobile court, the process of paying the fine has accelerated. In Coimbatore City, this process is being carried out through mobile courts three days a week. So far, motorists have paid the fine in 2,497 cases. Through this, Rs. 2.50 crore has been collected. Serious action is being taken to complete the remaining cases,” he said.
