“Taking into account the increased moisture content due to snow and rain, immediate action should be taken to purchase paddy with moisture content up to 22 percent.”, said AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami.

In a statement issued today, he said: Heavy snowfall has been occurring across Tamil Nadu since the beginning of 2025. Due to this, the paddy grains in the Samba paddy crops that were ready for harvest in the delta districts have become too heavy to bear the weight due to the increased moisture content. In this situation, the India Meteorological Department has warned that it will rain for 3-4 days from yesterday.

Following this, widespread rain has been falling across Tamil Nadu since last night. Especially in Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai, the paddy crops that were ready for harvest have been severely affected due to the rains. The paddy grains were already damaged due to the snowfall, and the rains that have been falling since yesterday have also affected the samba paddy crops that were planted on thousands of acres and were ready for harvest.

Furthermore, since the harvested and transported to the direct paddy procurement centers were not purchased immediately, the paddy bundles that are lying in the open are soaked with snow and rain and have high humidity. Therefore, I urge the direct paddy procurement centers to purchase all the paddy bundles brought by the farmers without any conditions.

It is highly condemnable that the government is watching the difficulties of the farmers without alleviating the hardships of the farmers while the farmers who have cultivated samba are suffering huge losses due to the snowfall and unseasonal rains.

❖ Immediately send revenue and agriculture department officials to directly assess the affected agricultural lands, and take steps to provide government relief to the affected farmers and obtain appropriate compensation through crop insurance.

❖ Immediately send ‘dryer’ trucks to dry paddy grains throughout the Delta districts and make arrangements to reduce the moisture content of the paddy grains.

❖ Currently, direct paddy procurement centers are purchasing paddy with 17 percent moisture content, and taking into account the increased moisture content due to snow and rain, immediate steps should be taken to purchase paddy with up to 22 percent moisture content.

Therefore, I urge the DMK government to immediately provide the necessary relief to the farmers of the Delta district affected by snow and rain. He said this in his statement.
