Production of Pongal pots begins

On the occasion of Thai Pongal, the work of producing the clay pots required for Pongal has begun in the Karamadai area. Every year, Thai Pongal is celebrated with great pomp by the public. On Pongal, people worship the sun by pouring Pongal in new pots.

Currently, there are only a few workers in the villages who make the clay pots and pans required for Pongal. They are engaged in the work of producing the clay pots required for Thai Pongal. In this regard, Palaniswami, 59, from Marudhur, next to Karamadai, said: Until the past 40 years, many people used to make clay pots and pans as a profession. With the increase in the dominance of aluminum and Eversilver utensils, the public is buying and using these utensils in large quantities. As a result, the purchase of clay pots and pans has completely decreased.

People are using new earthen pots and pans for Pongal on Pongal, new earthen lamps for Karthigai Deepam, and new earthen pots for weddings and mourning ceremonies, without changing the tradition. To meet their needs, we are making small quantities of earthenware during the respective periods. Permission is not easily obtained to bring clay from the open fields in vehicles.

This is also one of the reasons for the decline of this industry. Also, to take this industry among the youth, the Tamil Nadu government should come forward to set up training centers for making earthenware in many places and provide self-employment opportunities. Palaniswami said.
