Coimbatore; Municipal Police Commissioner Saravana Sundar has launched the ‘Beat Officer’ program to prevent incidents such as riots, ganja sale, illegal liquor sale, traffic problems, beatings etc. in the city areas. A new scheme has been created by consolidating old schemes including security in educational institutions.

For this, 312 policemen have been appointed from the police station and armed forces. The ‘Beat Officer’ scheme involves 24-hour patrolling in 52 beat vehicles, two policemen per two-wheeler, on a rotational basis.

‘Beat Officers’ have identified crime hotspots in their assigned areas. Beat officers make daily ‘visits’ there. In high traffic areas, a ‘beat officer’ will be present for about 30 minutes.

Beat officers continuously monitor places like schools, colleges, jewelery shops, bibans companies etc. Police Commissioner Saravana Sundar said that the number of crimes is likely to decrease due to the presence of beat officers in areas where public movement and crime occur.

A ‘Beat Officers System’ has been brought in to patrol 24 hours a day. Each beat police patrols and conducts audits in their assigned areas. Around 200 locations across the city were identified as theft and robbery hotspots.

Beat officers have been instructed to patrol the areas frequently. Various existing schemes have been formalized so that Beat Officers can look after them.

This will not affect the work of other police officers. One day a week the beat officers meet and talk to differently-abled children. If they have any need, we plan to do it with the help of private charities.

Each beat officer is instructed to ‘cover’ at least 10 key locations daily. Thus, crimes in the city can be easily monitored; It can also be prevented. Thus, he said.
