Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced the One Nation, One Election Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha today.

The One Nation, One Election Bill, which will conduct simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state legislative assemblies and municipal corporations, was introduced in the Lok Sabha today (December 17). Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced it.

The bill is being introduced in the Lok Sabha today despite opposition parties strongly opposing the bill.

The issue of holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state legislative assemblies and municipal corporations had been discussed for a long time. In this context, the Central Government constituted a high-level committee headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind to conduct a study in this regard and advise the Central Government.

This committee sought opinions from various parties, including various political parties and social organizations. Following this, the committee submitted its report to President Draupadi Murmu last March.

The bill was subsequently prepared. The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the bill. In this case, the bill was to be presented in the Lok Sabha yesterday in the current session of Parliament. However, it was announced that it will not be presented today.

The Central Government wants Union Home Minister Amit Shah to be present in the House when the bill is presented. He had gone to Chhattisgarh for a 3-day visit. In this case, he will return to Delhi today. He will participate in the proceedings of the House. Following this, the bill will be presented today, according to parliamentary sources.
