The deadline to apply for the pink auto scheme for women living in Chennai has been extended till December 10. Also, the requirement of having passed 10th class has been removed.

The Tamil Nadu government has introduced ‘pink autos’ as a new initiative for women’s safety. Accordingly, 250 autos are to be operated by women drivers in Chennai city to enable women and children to travel safely. Under this scheme, 250 women will be given a subsidy of Rs. 1 lakh each to buy an auto.

The remaining money required to buy an auto will be linked to banks. Women from Chennai, not exceeding the age of 25 to 45, who have a driving license, can apply for the pink auto scheme, and priority will be given to widows and destitute women, the Social Welfare Department had informed.

Accordingly, eligible female drivers to operate pink autos were advised to send the completed application to the address ‘Chennai District Social Welfare Officer (South) or (North), 8th Floor, Singara Velar Mansion, Chennai – 600 001’ by Nov. 23 (yesterday). Now the deadline for the same has been extended till Dec. 10.

Similarly, the requirement of having passed 10th standard to benefit from the scheme, which was earlier stipulated, has now also been removed. Therefore, the Commissioner of Social Welfare has called upon women who want to benefit from the pink autos scheme to take advantage of this.
