Heavy rain in Nilgiris: Mountain train cancelled; Normal life of the public affected

Udhagamandalam: Heavy rain is falling in the Nilgiris district in the wake of Cyclone Fenjal. Due to heavy rain, holidays have been declared for schools in Udhagamandalam, Kotagiri and Gudalur talukas. Normal life of the public has been affected due to the change in the weather.

Heavy rain fell in some districts including Chennai due to Cyclone ‘Fenjal’. As a result of the storm, the weather in the Nilgiris district has also changed for the last two days. There is heavy cloud cover in the mornings. In this situation, it has been raining widely across the Nilgiris district since last night. Heavy rain fell in Udhagamandalam, Gudalur and Kotagiri talukas. Due to this, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in these three talukas today.

Due to the heavy rain, the Nilgiris Mountain Train service has been cancelled today and tomorrow. In the Nilgiris district of Ooty, a pickup truck that got stuck in the water under the railway bridge on the road leading to the Ooty boat house due to continuous rain since night was pulled out with the help of another vehicle after a few hours of struggle. The minimum temperature in the district is 11 degrees Celsius, making it extremely cold. There is also heavy rain falling amidst the clouds.

As a result, the roads in Ooty were deserted with no movement of people. Furthermore, workers who go to work in the hill vegetable gardens and tea gardens in the suburbs including Ooty stayed home instead of going to work due to the severe cold with the heavy rain.

Vehicles on the mountain roads drove carefully with their headlights on. As of this morning, the maximum rainfall in the district was recorded in Gudalur, which was 73 mm.
