H.Raja
Chennai: The special court hearing cases against MPs and MLAs in Chennai has sentenced H.Raja, the president of the Tamil Nadu BJP Coordination Committee, to 6 months in prison each in two cases filed against him for his comments on the destruction of Periyar statue and criticism of DMK MP Kanimozhi.
H.Raja had posted on his X site in April 2018 that he would destroy the Periyar statue, and in March 2018, he had posted comments on the X site criticizing DMK MP Kanimozhi. Cases were registered at Erode City Police and Karungalpalayam police stations.
These cases were heard by Special Court Judge Jayavel, who is hearing cases against MPs and MLAs in Chennai. During the hearing, H. Raja argued that there was no evidence to support his statement that he would break the Periyar statue and that his comments about DMK MP Kanimozhi were political. Furthermore, since DMK MP Kanimozhi did not file a complaint regarding this matter, a case was registered based on a complaint filed by a third party. Therefore, it was argued that he should be acquitted from this case. As all the arguments in the case were completed, the case was adjourned for judgment.
In this situation, Judge G. Jayavel, who gave his verdict in this case on Monday, said that the police have proven the charges in this case. This court has determined that both the posts were sent from H. Raja’s social media page and this court has determined that H. Raja is guilty. He has sentenced H. Raja to 6 months imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5 thousand each in both these cases. Furthermore, the judge has ordered a stay of the sentence to enable an appeal in this case.
