Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation has submitted a report to the Tamil Nadu government seeking Rs 20 crore for the construction of facilities including a lift and escalator to cross the road at the Ukkadam bus stand in Coimbatore.
Various buses are being operated from the Ukkadam bus stand to Palani, Dindigul, Palakkad and other towns. A huge flyover was built by the State Highways Department to avoid traffic congestion on the Ukkadam-Aathupalam road.
There are a total of 7 bus stands in Coimbatore. The Omni Bus Stand on Sathi Salai has been renovated. Rs 10 crore has been requested to renovate the Singanallur bus stand. Similarly, work is underway to prepare a detailed project report for renovation at a cost of Rs 30 crore from the Local Planning Commission funds. In that regard, the Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs 20 crore for the renovation of the Ukkadam bus stand. The Coimbatore Corporation has prepared a project report for this. It has been handed over to the Tamil Nadu government. The Ukkadam bus stand is going to be built at two places, the place where the bus stand is currently operating and the vacant place near the flyover landing on the Selvapuram bypass. In this situation, it is very difficult to cross the road. The elderly, the physically challenged, and children stumble while crossing the road. Due to this, a bridge with escalators and lift facilities like a subway is being built to go from one end to the other. The bridge will be built in the remaining space allocated for the construction of the metro station. Work including the construction of the escalator will be carried out in consultation with the Metro Rail Company. Similarly, buses going to Pollachi and Palakkad route exit from the Ukkadam bus stand via the customs bypass. At that time, vehicles coming from the Selvaram bypass, Town Hall, and Aathupalam areas through the lower part of the flyover and going through the Sungam bypass are also at risk of collision. In other words, since the bus is so obscured that it is not visible, there is a possibility of an accident, so it has been decided to construct a roundabout.
