The Coimbatore L&T Bypass Road will be handed over to the National Highways Authority of India on June 1, ahead of the commencement of the upgrading work. The L&T Bypass Road was built keeping in mind the prevailing traffic congestion in Coimbatore. This bypass road is 28 kilometers long from Neelampur on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore to Madukkarai on Palakkad Road.
This is one of the early projects implemented by private companies in India under the ‘Buy Own Transfer’ (BOD) scheme. This road was built as a two-lane road at a cost of Rs 104 crore. This bypass road is very helpful for vehicles coming from Kerala to bypass the traffic jam in Coimbatore and go towards Erode and Trichy, and for vehicles coming in the opposite direction to go to Kerala without getting stuck in the traffic jam.
This road was opened in 1999. The L&T company that built the road has been given a 30-year toll collection license. This license is with L&T until 2029. In this situation, there has been a long-standing demand to upgrade this road to a four-lane highway.

Officials said that this road will be handed over to the National Highways Authority of India for the work of upgrading it to a 4-lane highway and service roads on both sides.

With this, the National Highways Authority of India is going to start collecting toll tax from June 1. It has also been reported that the toll booths currently at 6 places on the bypass road will be reduced and only one toll booth will be operational.
