Coimbatore: Work is underway to renovate two traditional buildings in Coimbatore, the Horse-drawn carriage court building and the Highways Colony Governor’s bungalow. The work will be completed in 2 months, officials said.

The Horse-drawn carriage court building near the Coimbatore District Collector’s Office was built in 1863 during the British era. Courts were functioning here. Fines were imposed for driving horse-drawn carriages without proper permission and without lights and the case was stopped in the court for trial, hence the name Horse-drawn carriage court.

This court, which is about 161 years old, was in use until the year 2000. Meanwhile, the integrated court complex on Coimbatore Government Arts College Road was moved there after a new construction. Subsequently, the old horse-drawn carriage court was found to be in a very dilapidated state. There was a demand to renovate it without changing its antiquity.

Following this, the work of renovating the horse-drawn carriage court building, which is spread over an area of 2.60 acres, at a cost of Rs. 9.01 crore began in late 2021. The work is currently nearing completion.

Governor’s Bungalow: Similarly, there is a bungalow owned by a Sulur Zameen in Trichy Salai Highways Colony. The Governor used to stay in this bungalow during the British rule. Due to this, it was named Governor’s Bungalow. There was a demand to renovate the Governor’s Bungalow, which was in a dilapidated state.
