Due to this, they are losing Rs. 25 to 30 crore every day and have lost about Rs. 200 crore in this one week alone, Bhoopathi, the president of the Coimbatore and Tirupur District Power Loom Owners Association, told reporters today.
Power loom owners who weave for a wage are receiving the contractual wage set in 2022 and are providing their services. They have been insisting for more than a year that their wages should be increased, and it is learnt that 10 talks have been held and protests have been launched for this purpose so far.
Coimbatore and Tiruppur wage-weaving power loom owners have been on strike for the past week, and Coimbatore District Collector Pawan Kumar held talks with power loom owners from Coimbatore district today.
Power loom associations from Annur, Thekkalur, Somanur and Kannampalayam participated in the talks. Later, speaking to reporters, Bhoopathi, the president of the Coimbatore Tiruppur District Wage-Weaving Power Loom Owners Association, said that they are currently closing more than one lakh power looms and going on strike.
During the talks held today, he said that he had emphasized to the District Collector that the power loom sector can be saved only if there is a wage hike, and that he had made a demand for a wage hike of 50% to 60% from the 2022 contract wage. He said that he had said that he would consider these demands.
He said that they have said that they are going to hold a tripartite meeting involving the district administration, power loom department and textile department.
