Mettupalayam: Bahubali elephant, which was roaming on the Mettupalayam-Ooty road, looted a roadside watermelon shop there. There was a commotion as the locals threw firecrackers to scare the elephant away. A single wild elephant known as Bahubali has been present in various areas of Mettupalayam and its surrounding areas such as Thekkampatti, Kurumbanoor, Odanthurai, Palapatti, Ooty road, and Kotagiri road for the past few years. The Bahubali elephant, which occasionally roams the town, then stays within the forest for a few months. Meanwhile, the Bahubali elephant was roaming on the Mettupalayam-Ooty road early yesterday. At that time, it looted a roadside watermelon shop and ate watermelon. This caused a commotion on the Ooty road.

At that time, some people threw firecrackers at the elephant to scare it away. This incident has caused great dissatisfaction among forest enthusiasts.

In this regard, Mettupalayam Forest Ranger Joseph Stalin said that the people there have been advised not to set up stalls along the Ooty and Kotagiri roads in a way that would attract wild animals. The public should not try to scare away wild animals including elephants by bursting firecrackers on their own. The forest department should be informed immediately. We are continuously monitoring the elephant Bahubali. People should not be afraid, he said.
