GKNM Hospital Organise​s Marathon ​in Aid ​of Children With Heart Defects ​and Childhood Cancers

G.Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital, Coimbatore had organised ‘Run for Little Hearts’, an awareness run that was held on September 29th to aid children with heart defects and childhood cancers.
September month being the Childhood cancer awareness month and September 29th being the World Heart Day, the marathon was scheduled in Mani Higher Secondary School, Papanaickenpalayam, Coimbatore.
The event was supported by LMW, Lakshmi Mills Co. Ltd and Lakshmi Card Clothing. The marathon had been approved by the Coimbatore District Athletic Association.
Coimbatore City (South) Deputy Commissioner of Police K.Saravanakumar and GKNM Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy flagged off the awareness Run along with other dignitaries, by around 5.45 am.
There were three different categories: 1 & 3 km for all age groups where children and families ran together.
There was a 5 km run that was for people aged between 12 and 18 for boys & girls, and above 18 years for men and women. The last one was the 10 km category. It was for men and women who are above 18 years of age. Cash prizes worth Rs. 75,000 was given for the winners in 5 and 10 km categories. Around 2000 members actively participated in this marathon.
Cancer & CHD recovered Children also participated in this mega marathon.
Incidentally, the month of September is observed as International Childhood Cancer Awareness month every year, and World Heart Day is a global event that occurs in the month of September. Such awareness programmes are being conducted to support children with CHD and Childhood Cancer, for improving access to treatment and care and in memory of children that have fallen a victim to CHD and Cancer
