The boundaries of Coimbatore Corporation have been expanded! 14 local bodies have been merged again, and it has been decided to hold elections after defining the wards

A government order has been issued to merge 14 local bodies, including nine panchayats, four town panchayats and one municipality, with the Coimbatore Corporation. It has been announced that the general elections will be held after deciding and defining the number of wards in the expanded corporation. Coimbatore Corporation is spread over an area of 257.04 sq km and has 100 wards. Its boundaries were last expanded in 2011. Due to various reasons including urban development and population growth, it was necessary to expand the boundaries of the corporation again.

This is because the public living in the panchayats adjacent to the corporation were not getting adequate facilities. To resolve this, it was decided to identify and merge such local bodies.

The term of office of the rural local bodies ends on Jan. 5. Before conducting the local body elections again, the Tamil Nadu government has considered changing the boundaries of the local bodies. Accordingly, four town panchayats namely Madukkarai Municipality, Perur, Vedapatti, Irukur, and Vellalur, and nine panchayats namely Neelampur, Mayilampatti, Chinniyampalayam, Kurudampalayam, Somaiyampalayam, Asokapuram, Keeranatham, Malumichampatti, and Seerapalayam have been merged with the Coimbatore Corporation.

Following this, the number of wards has been re-determined, the ward boundaries have been demarcated, and the next general election will be held for the Municipal Council. The government order issued by the Tamil Nadu government has been published in the official gazette for public inspection. Currently, the Coimbatore Corporation has an area of 257.04 square kilometers. The area of the 14 local government areas to be merged is 158.36 sq km, thus, the area of the corporation has expanded to 415.40 sq km.

Earlier, when the corporation area was expanded in 2011, three municipalities namely Kurichi, Kuniyamuthur, and Kaundampalayam, seven town panchayats namely Vadavalli, Veerakeralam, Thudiyalur, Vellakinaru, Saravanampatti, Chinna Vedampatti, and Kalapatti, and Vilankurichi panchayat were merged. It has been 13 years.

However, facilities have not been provided to meet the needs of the public. Drinking water is not available without shortage.

The underground sewerage project has not been fully implemented. Therefore, it is a mystery when the infrastructure facilities will be improved in the areas falling under the 14 local government bodies that are currently being merged.
